This is the first in what will hopefully be a new series called "What's The Deal With", where I do retrospective reviews on movies, books and music that I think are interesting and have things about them that are worth talking about in more detail. This gives me a bit more freedom to talk a bit about some of my favourite media outside of the new releases, although I will definitely still be doing that too. So, what's the deal with Annihilation ? Annihilation is the second feature film from writer director Alex Garland, who not only previously brought us Ex Machina , one of the better science fiction films of the decade, but has also left his mark as purely a writer with work such as his novel The Beach , and films like 28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go  and Sunshine. It feel slightly strange saying that Annihilation is only his second feature as director, given how big his influence already is in the world of film, and that says something about the power he has behin

So many of you enjoyed my list of my favourite films of the decade, and I know you were wondering when I was going to get around to my favourite records of the decade - here it is! There are so many more records I have heard compared to films I have seen, so this one took a long time to put together. Unlike my film list I am not going to be expanding on why these are my picks, because that took such a long time to complete, and that is time that I don't have when it comes to putting this together. Only one entry per artist, and I am not going to be putting them in any particular order, unless you know the alphabet. Hopefully you come across some records that you might not have heard. Enjoy! I saw a stack of movies towards the end of last year, and didn't get to talk about them. Some of them I don't feel like are worth talking about that much, or I'm not particularly interested in talking about (ahem, Star Wars ), but here are some thoughts on some of those films: Doctor Sleep (MA15+) I like director Mike Flanagan's work, but when I heard that he was going to be helming Doctor Sleep , a film that needed to either serve as a sequel to Kubrick's classic The Shining , an adaptation of Stephen King's novel that continues the story of his own original vision of The Shining , or both (!), I was a little sceptical. My experience of Flanagan has always been one of admiration of the control he has over his craft and the visual elements of his filmmaking more so than the structural story elements and his handling of thematic elements.
